Advertisers ''spend more'' on newspaper websites

Advertising spending on newspaper websites grew by 21.1 per in the third quarter compared to the same period last year, the internet now accounting for 7.1 per cent of all newspaper ad spending, according to new research.

According to the Newspaper Association of America (NAA), online newspaper website advertising spending rose to $773 million (£374 million), as it enjoyed its 14th consecutive quarter of double digit growth.

John Sturm, chief executive of the NAA, noted: "Newspaper websites continue to generate substantial revenue by offering advertisers access to the nation´s most desirable group of consumers.

"The continued fallout from declines in the housing market clearly affects real estate, recruitment and retail advertising. Newspaper companies continue to take aggressive measures to prepare for the future during a period of economic challenges for the industry."

Total advertising expenditures at newspaper companies were $10.9 billion (£5.3 billion) during the third quarter of 2007, down 7.4 per cent compared with the third quarter last year, with spending for print ads in newspapers totaling $10.1 billion (£4.9 billion).
