Online shopping experiences ''mega minute''

Consumers around Britain set a new record on Monday when they spent a collective total of £750,000 on Christmas shopping in just one minute, it has been revealed.

At 1.09pm office workers across the country logged onto the web during their lunch breaks, with 128 people spending almost £100 each on average, every second for sixty seconds, according to Retail Decisions, an internet monitoring company.

The sixty-second period, the highest sales point of the year so far, was so lucrative, that experts quickly dubbed it the "mega minute". It is expected that total online sales for the day could reach up to £370 million, well in excess of the previous £291 million record set on Monday of the previous week.

Among the most popular items being purchased were the Nintendo Wii games console, iPod shuffle, items from the Perfect face cream range and Gillette razors.

Some 90 per cent of British consumes have bought at least one thing online in the last year, and Britain´s online retail economy is now worth more than £53 billion.

According to a recent survey by eDigital Research, 87 per cent of the adult population expects to buy some presents online this year, with 63 per cent buying most of them on the web.
