Security of personal details is an increasing concern

An increasing number of people are worried about the potential risks of giving out their personal details, it has been claimed.

According to David Smith, deputy commissioner at the Information Commissioner´s Office (ICO), an independent organisation, the safety and security of personal details is a great cause of concern for consumers.

He maintained that this anxiety was attributable to several factors, such as the increasing incidence of identity theft.

Mr Smith commented: "More people than ever are worried about the safety and security of their personal details.

"It´s clear that this is driven by a number of things - one of them is the recent data losses, particularly by government, and also the fact that more and more identity theft is taking place all the time.

"As we all give more and more information out to all sorts of organisations, they build up bigger and bigger databases with pictures of our lives and the risks get greater all the time."
