Teenage content creation grows

More teenagers are participating in the web are creating their own content, according to a new study.

Research carried out by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that 64 per cent of young people aged between 12 and 17 engaged with at least one type of content creation media.

This is an increase on the figure for 2004, 57 per cent, and indicates that girls are embracing social media in this way to a greater extent than boys.

According to the report, 35 per cent of teenage girls and 20 per cent of teen boys use blogs, with 54 per cent of girls posting photos online compared with 40 per cent of boys.

The study also revealed that 47 per cent of teens have posted photographs online.

Boys, however, were found by the investigation to be participating more in video posting. Some 19 per cent have posted video content online, compared to ten per cent of boys.

"However, many teen content creators do not simply plaster their creative endeavours on the web for anyone to view; many teens limit access to content that they share," the report said.
