Facebook's UK membership passes 30 million

Facebook now has more than 30 million members in the UK, underlining its potential as a marketing channel.
Joanna Shields, vice-president of Facebook, revealed the startling figure at the Financial Times Digital Media and Broadcasting Conference yesterday (Wednesday March 2).
If accurate, it means that roughly half of the UK population is a registered member of the social networking site.
More than four million users have signed up in the past six months alone, based on the previous figure of 26 million users published in July 2010.
Facebook confirmed the number of UK users following the announcement from Ms Shields.
The site's founder, Mark Zuckerberg, has boldly predicted that there will eventually be one billion Facebook members worldwide.
At last count, the social networking behemoth is currently over half way to achieving that astonishing goal.
According to Ms Shields, the increasingly common implementation of Share and Like buttons on publishers' sites has helped to boost traffic to Facebook.
