MySpace tackles copyright infringements

13/02/2007
Social networking website MySpace is now offering free video filtering to prevent breach of copyright on its pages.
MySpace will use Audible Magic technology to create a database of video fingerprints and will compare each video listed with their records.

If a user uploads a video that matches the fingerprint, MySpace will be able to block it from appearing on the site.

The website already offers a free music feed blocking service and is working on a tool to improve ease of use for copyright holders.

This copyrighting move is one of the largest advances in internet copyrighting, with many similar services still unable to provide the same level of protection.

"For MySpace, video filtering is about protecting artists and the work they create," explained Chris DeWolfe, CEO and co-founder of MySpace.

Clips intended for free distribution by advertisers will not be targeted by the new scheme and can still be posted freely by users.
