Botnets are undermining email marketing
2009/10/01
Cybercriminals operating botnets are undermining the work of email marketing professionals, it has been claimed.
According to Biz Report, despite a recent number of major botnet clampdowns, which included the closure of McColo and PriceWert, other cybercriminal groups have surfaced to fill the void.
The news provider points to research from Symantec´s MessageLabs, which shows that the botnet GRUM is now responsible for more than a fifth of all spam messages.
Meanwhile, BOBAX accounts for almost 16 per cent of spam messages.
Together, the illegal networks account for 150 billion spam emails every day.
"Botnets may be the biggest threat to email marketing," Biz Report writer Kristina Knight states.
According to Article Maniac, marketing professionals need to become more creative to ensure their messages get past spam filters, which are growing in sophistication.
The website said that businesses should ensure their email marketing messages are appropriately branded to ensure readers can easily identify who it is from.
