Microsoft 'beats' Google and Yahoo in total time spent online
2009/11/09
Internet users are spending more time on Microsoft sites compared to Yahoo or Google, new research shows.
According to digital media analyst comScore, Microsoft sites, including msn messenger, have captured nearly 15 per cent of the time spent online worldwide in September, increasing 43 per cent, from 2.7 billion to 3.9 billion hours year-on-year.
Google came second with 2.5 billion hours, an increase of 48 per cent, while Yahoo´s share of online time decreased 14 per cent to 1.7 billion.
Social networking site Facebook showed the greatest increase, rising 193 per cent from 474 billion hours in September 2008 to 1387 billion in September 2009. When results include Europe only, Facebook takes third place, ahead of Yahoo.
Tecent Inc, AOL, eBay and Fox Interactive Media also featured.
The results could affect media planning decisions as companies move towards websites with the greatest number of users.
Jack Flanagan, executive vice president of comScore Media Metrix, said: "Understanding the global internet landscape is the first step towards executing effective marketing strategies in these growing markets."
ComScore was rated the preferred online audience measurement service in a William Blair and Company survey this year.
