Google Social Search goes live

2010/01/28
The full roll-out of Google´s Social Search has begun, it has been announced.
People using the tool will be provided with customised search results based upon the people in their social network.

Since October, Social Search has been an opt-in Google Labs experiment but the announcement today means that it is to become available as a beta product to all users of Google.com.

In a blog post, Google´s Maureen Heymans, technical lead for Social Search, and Terran Melconian, technical lead for Social Image Search, said: "We think there´s tremendous potential for social information to improve search, and we´re just beginning to scratch the surface."

"We´re leaving a beta label on social results because we know there´s a lot more we can do," they noted, before advising people that in order to get the most out of Social Search, they should create a Google profile.

Earlier this week, comScore said the global search market grew by 46 percent from 2008 to 2009.
