Twitter followers are worth less than a penny
2010/02/02
Twitter followers are being offered on eBay for less than a penny each, according to a report.
Last year Jason Calacanis was offering $250,000 (£158,888) to buy a spot on Twitter´s Suggested User List, which would have provided him with about a million followers. His plans were crushed when Twitter revamped the site to be less monolithic.
According to Tech Crunch, it is now possible to buy Twitter followers for less than a penny each.
The news provider stated: "You are not actually buying followers outright (Twitter doesn´t allow people to transfer their followers), but rather services which ´guarantee´ getting your account up to the promised number of followers through ´proven and safe methods´."
It adds that automated bots are used to increase the number of followers, while cheap labour in China is also used to create Twitter Follower Farms.
In December, Bloomberg BusinessWeek reported that Twitter´s content search deals with Microsoft and Google had earned it £15.3 million.
