Mobile use increases as people check Facebook on the go

2010/02/08
Over 25 per cent of the UK´s population checked the internet on their mobile phone in December, new figures have revealed.
According to the GSMA Mobile Media Metrics report, which was carried out by comScore, 16 million people went online via their mobile phones with a large number of Brits checking Facebook.

The figures show that Facebook attracted five million unique users in December, while Google´s sites were visited by 4.5 million.

Microsoft sites were the third most visited, followed by Orange and AOL. Apple received the six most mobile internet visits, with Vodafone taking the seventh spot. BBC, Flirtomatic and Yahoo rounded off the list.

Richard Foan, managing director of ABCe and chair of the Joint Industry Committee for Web Standards in the UK and Ireland, said: "The initiative undertaken by the GSMA and comScore is a great step forward for mobile media."

Last week, a report by Gartner said social media websites such as Facebook would play a bigger role in businesses in the future.
