Google Social Search 'ramps up impact of personalised search'

2010/03/15
Companies that use search marketing techniques to connect with consumers need to consider Google Social Search in their marketing plans, it has been claimed.
In a column for Search Engine Watch, industry expert John Greer noted that Social Search "essentially ramps up the impact that personalised search or search wiki has had".

Using Social Search, Google examines several areas including Gmail accounts, Google Talk transcripts, subscribed RSS feeds, Flickr, Picasa, FriendFeed and Twitter profiles which a user follows.

For search marketing purposes, firms need to ensure that they are updating their Twitter account regularly, Mr Greer noted.

With the introduction of Google Buzz and the inclusion of Gmail in Social Search, email newsletters also need to optimised.

"Newsletters can be posted online, or found through desktop search, so optimising them has multiple benefits. This means no more newsletters that are one giant image," he added.

Last month, Tim Gibbon, the co-founder and editor of the Social Media Portal, said Social Search can offer companies numerous search marketing benefits.
