Online retail sales show growth
2010/07/21
Online retail sales for June reveal a year-on-year increase as marketing investment continues to pay dividends.
The latest results from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index show that sales were up for a fifth on the same time a year ago, with the warm weather and a summer of high-profile sporting events cited as reasons for the growth.
Shoppers forked out a total of £4.4 billion online last month, equating to £72 for every person in the UK.
It´s the second month in a row that year-on-year growth has been higher than 20 per cent as the industry enjoys its best rate of expansion since June 2008.
Despite the England football team failing at the World Cup, sustained marketing efforts to cash in on the tournament proved fruitful, with supermarkets seeing a 23 per cent increase on alcohol sales.
Electronic goods were also up by 26 per cent on the previous year as consumers purchased items including new television sets and digital radios.
Prior to the World Cup in South Africa, Lucy Handley told Marketing Week that the competition represented a huge opportunity for marketers.
