Smartphones 'the next big ad platform'
2010/07/29
The proliferation of smartphones and their increasing affordability means mobile advertising is set to gain further prominence, an expert has said.
Natasha Stokes, editor of Mobile Choice, noted the growing trend for manufacturers to produce budget smartphone devices and said the implications for marketing professionals were obvious.
Next-generation operating systems are being more widely used as they provide consumers with more choice, Ms Stokes explained.
"The Android OS is open to any manufacturer that wants to use it, and while there are still more high-end Android phones on the market, companies such as Samsung and LG are marketing the availability of lower-end Android devices," she said.
Ms Stokes maintained that as web use increasingly moves to mobile, "it makes perfect sense to look to smartphones as the next big advertising platform."
James Atkinson, editor of the fortnightly UK mobile phone industry magazine Mobile, recently said "the time has come for mobile advertising" as technological developments have made devices more conducive to ad campaigns.
