Facebook's dominance set to continue

2010/07/30
Facebook´s dominant position among the big-hitting social networking sites will continue to strengthen unless there is a wholesale change in the nature of social media, an expert has said.
According to InSites Consulting, the news that Google is consulting with producers of online games to enhance its own social network offering will not unduly trouble Facebook.

The best opportunities for marketers to gain maximum exposure will remain on the world´s most popular social network.

"Looking at the current situation with social networks, it is impossible to win from Facebook," said Steven Van Belleghem, managing partner of InSites consulting.

"The law of networks states that the value of a network equals the number of users squared, which implies exponential growth."

However, Mr Van Belleghem did not rule out the possibility of Facebook being overtaken as the number one social networking site one day.

InSites Consulting revealed in March that seven in every ten internet users are part of at least one social network, which translates to 940 million users worldwide.
