SEO's across the UK waited to hear the big announcement from the major search engine yesterday, what would the big news be?

We had suspicions of two possible updates from some experiments we had seen, an expansion in the number of results per results page and the now infamous instant search.

Instant search is being rolled-out in phases around the world over the coming weeks.  For the UK this means within a week users signed into Google accounts with Chrome v5/6, Firefox v3, Safari v5 for Mac and Internet Explorer v8 will be exposed to the update, with the option to turn it off.

Matt Cutts maintains this update will not affect organic rankings, "The search results will remain the same for a query, but it’s possible that people will learn to search differently over time", so if your site already ranks well for the terms you know people search for then it should not affect your organic traffic levels for those keywords, however in the future the keywords users use to search may change.

Being reserved Brits, here at Equi=media we are monitoring clients organic traffic closely and implementing analytics methods in order to see what impact if any this update is having.

How users feel about this is yet to be seen.
