Government to spend £12m on online marketing

2009/06/17
The government is planning on spending £12 million on a co-ordinated marketing campaign encouraging Britons to get online.
The plans were unveiled by communications minister Lord Carter in the Digital Britain report.

He claimed that people need to be fully aware of the benefits of being online.

"It is clear that the current offer is not sufficiently exciting to motivate some people to get online," the report states, adding that the government can do more to create a compelling online offer by delivering public services over the internet.

The report pointed to the digital switchover, which was a clear and coherent campaign aimed at promoting the benefits of digital television to the population.

As well as marketing over the course of the next three years, the government will use the £12 million to engage those who need more support.

The Digital Britain report also suggests charging customers 50p per month extra for their landlines to help fund the rollout of next generation broadband – something which has been dubbed a broadband tax.
