Ads in AI Mode go global: what it means for advertisers

Google is making ads in AI Mode available beyond the US, with the UK on the list for Q4 2026. In a post on 28 October, Shashi Thakur, Google's VP and GM for Search Ads, confirmed ten new markets are live now and more are coming before the year is out.

For UK advertisers, that makes this a near-term planning question, not a US curiosity. AI Mode is where search is heading, and ads are about to sit inside it.

What Google announced

Three changes landed in one short post: a wider rollout, a UK date, and a new ad slot in follow-up questions.

Table showing the roll out of ads in AI Mode in 2026

All ads carry a "Sponsored" label, and Google says it will keep testing new formats.

Google justifies the move with two observations.

  • AI Mode queries run about three times longer than traditional searches, according to its May 2026 US AI Mode report. A conversation in AI Mode can run several questions deep, and each one is now a fresh chance for an ad to appear.
  • In recent US data, sponsored product listings in AI Mode earn click-through rates similar to organic ones.

We also can't ignore Alphabet's Q3 results, published on 28th October 2026, which showed income growth in paid search slowing with AI Mode diluting what each search query earns and resulting in $500 billion being wiped off Alphabet's value. Presumably it is hoped this rapid roll out of ads in AI Mode across the world will correct that slow down.

How you get in: no new campaign type

There is no AI Mode campaign to build and no AI Mode placement to tick. Ads are drawn from campaigns you already run, as long as they use Google's AI-led matching:

  • Performance Max campaigns
  • Shopping campaigns, with a well-kept Merchant Center feed
  • Search campaigns using broad match, including those with AI Max for Search switched on.

Google considers both the user's question and the AI response when choosing an ad, so tightly built exact and phrase-match campaigns on their own are unlikely to show. Eligibility is no promise of placement, either: ads still need to win the auction and fit the conversation (Search Engine Land, Search Engine Roundtable).

The catch is reporting. There is still no separate AI Mode view, so any change in results is hard to pin on AI Mode rather than on the wider reach that broad match or AI Max brings.

What UK advertisers should do before Q4 2026

The UK opportunity is weeks away, so the time to prepare is now. Our own AI Max experiments this autumn point to five practical steps.

  1. Test, don't just switch on. Run AI Max as a Google Ads experiment with a 50/50 split. In our tests, results ranged from a modest gain to a sharp rise in cost per conversion, sometimes within the same sector.
  2. Watch spend, not just conversions. In one test, the AI Max experiment spent more than twice the control on a supposedly even split. Set budget alerts and check daily.
  3. Read the search terms every week. Brand terms, competitor names and loosely related queries all slipped through in our tests. Longer, chattier AI Mode queries will make this more likely and harder to spot.
  4. Build negatives early, and test them. One existing exact negative failed to stop a near-identical variant. Check that your lists catch the real phrasing people use.
  5. Fix your conversion signals first. Where the main goal was low volume, Smart Bidding had little to learn from and the results were unreadable. Make sure the conversions you bid on are frequent and meaningful.

Also check where the gains come from. In one test, the AI Max experiment improved, but the uplift came from keyword traffic rather than AI Max's own new matches. That is worth knowing before you credit AI Mode with a win.

The bottom line

Ads in AI Mode are coming to the UK this quarter, and they will run through the campaigns you already have. The advertisers who do well will be the ones who tested AI-led matching early, kept a close eye on search terms, and fed Smart Bidding clean conversion data.
