How SEO and Branding impact organic visibility in 2027

For years, SEO has largely focused on a brand’s owned digital estate: optimise the website, create relevant content and build authority. 2027 SEO strategies won’t be successful on that alone.

AI Search and SEO is accelerating a shift from website authority to brand authority. Visibility increasingly depends not only on what your business says about itself, but on what the wider web says about it, whether that's trade publications or YouTube videos.

AI Search needs evidence, not just optimisation

When we analyse AI Search results, one pattern becomes particularly important: AI systems draw evidence from sources businesses don’t own. That makes brand building an SEO issue.

A business can optimise a page to say it is an expert, market leader or trusted provider. But that is still a first-party claim. Reviews, publisher coverage, expert commentary, video and genuine discussion provide independent corroboration. This is the trust layer that will differentiate you from competitors in 2027.

Create an SEO evidence ecosystem

Consider a podcast featuring one of your subject-matter experts. The SEO opportunity shouldn’t end when the recording is embedded on your website and there're a few keywords added to the page.

The full conversation could live on YouTube. Original insights can inform editorial content. Data discussed during the podcast can become digital PR. Experts can develop the conversation on LinkedIn. Journalists and publishers may subsequently cite the research. That is the future of SEO.

One strong piece of expertise creates multiple independent signals connecting your people, your brand and your specialist subject. That is much harder to manufacture than simply producing another SEO article. And that is precisely the point. According to one speaker at Semrush's Spotlight Conference, only 3% of people verify data from AI search results which is why it is a must for LLM’s to make it hard to be cited for 'best' related queries.

The four layers of AI Search trust

For commercial searches, we see a four-layer trust model that works well for businesses.

Reviews: prove the customer experience

As commercial intent increases, independent validation becomes more important. In one underlying study, review platforms accounted for 25% more citations at the commercial-intent stage than at the research stage. A brand claiming it provides excellent service is marketing. Customers independently demonstrating that experience is evidence.

Video: demonstrate expertise

Video is also becoming an even bigger part of search visibility. One piece of analysis from Semrush Spotlight found 94% of YouTube citations appearing within AI results came from long-form videos. For brands, this makes detailed interviews, demonstrations, guides and expert discussions particularly interesting. They allow real people to demonstrate knowledge rather than relying solely on written claims of expertise.

Publishers: build independent authority

This is arguably the biggest opportunity. If AI Search is asked for the “best” provider, every provider could theoretically publish a page declaring itself the winner.

Independent publishers provide another layer of validation. Rather than concentrating entirely on ranking your own page, therefore, examine who influences the existing answer.

  • Which publications rank?
  • Which brands do they mention?
  • What evidence are their recommendations based upon?

User-generated content: create real-world corroboration

A B2B-specific analysis found LinkedIn cited in 11% of AI responses. That makes visible subject-matter expertise increasingly valuable. An employee consistently sharing credible insights about a specialist topic creates another connection between the individual, brand and subject. This shouldn't mean manufacturing social posts for SEO. Authentic expertise is the asset.

From brand claim to buyer judgement

Your website establishes what you want to be known for. Reviews, publishers, experts, customers, research and video help prove it. Search engines and AI systems interpret those signals. SEO strategies will be about building brands that search engines, AI systems and, most importantly, people have enough evidence to trust.
